Robot security guards now roll among us

Your robot-takeover nightmares just became more real: Meet K5, the robot security guard that will retail for $6.25 an hour.

The bots were recently deployed at the Tech In Motion conference at Microsoft’s Silicon Valley campus. Look!

That is not a simulation!!

This was probably inevitable. Last year’s Oxford University study on job automation said security guards had an 84 percent chance of being replaced by machines.

And Google recently decided to hire its entire security guard unit after they threatened to unionize, so robots could be the next step to cutting costs further. Indeed, Rachel Metz reports “an unnamed technology company” in Silicon Valley will deploy four K5 robot guards by the end of the year. She recently profiled K5’s maker, Knightscope for MIT’s Technology Review.
